Post No. 38: A Christmas Poem

Note: This post is not political nor is it meant to be about Religion. It’s about Jesus the man, his example and insights. And it is about the tradition in the West for celebrating Christmas based on his life and message. I’ve had comments on FB poetry pages that misinterpreted this poem.

I was asked by some readers to re-post my poem from last year, “Keep Jesus in Christmas” (Post No. 30). It seems this year some are resurrecting the old meme, “Jesus is the reason for the season”. Perhaps that would have been a better title for last years’ Christmas poem. Christianity has had a profound impact on Western civilization, and the best of its values are found in the way Jesus lived his life. So as promised, here is a reposting of my poem from last year:

“Jesus lived his message

And people followed

The emperor made it viral

Now we have Christmas

It celebrates the birth

Of love and compassion

Embodied in a human

We know as Jesus

He saw into our nature

The good, the bad and ugly

The slave, the sinner and saint

All existing without taint

It baffles the mind

How can this be?

Jesus just lived it

So all could see.

He saw we’re not separate

One from another

It’s only human minds

That create distinct kinds

What follows is love

Living with compassion

So Christmas is for us

And was started by Jesus.”
